AIA 1999 Compensation Survey Indicates Strong Salary Increases
The AIA Web site has a news story on the preliminary findings gathered from the Compensation at US Architecture Firms 1999 AIA Report, which will soon be available from the AIA/Rizzoli Bookstore in July. The report states that after several years of modest gains in compensation the trend has faded to brisk increases in salaries in the last three years (1996-1999). In 1996 salaries were below those of 1990 with inflation factored in, but since 1996 salaries have far outpaced the increases in inflation. Salaries across all architect and intern positions increased more than 17 percent over this three year period and more than 10 percent with inflation factored in. That works out to be about a three percent per year increase in net salaries over inflation from 1996-1999. Preliminary data has the average salary for associates at $72,100, a 22 percent gain in the last three years. All intern averages are $35,200, a 29 percent gain. Specific positions in the report state salary averages as follows:
These are healthy increases in compensation for a field that has struggled in recent times to achieve compensation equal to its peer professions. If these figures don't seem to match your world, remember that they are national averages and that regional compensation can differ some. However, don't rule out the possibility that maybe it's about time to ask for that raise, switch firms or move to a better paying region.
