Architects List Page: Update and Relevant Market Data

14 May 99.

The Architects List page was updated today with new professionals added to the member list. If your firm sent in corrections or new information, that information should be updated as well.

The Architects List is currently at just under 100 professional firms in over a dozen countries worldwide. Many of these firms report to have over 50 professionals in their organizations which results in hundreds, and possibly thousands of total "seats" in the AEC-Macintosh market. While that number may look good to you -- promising perhaps -- that isn't nearly enough to begin to grab software developer's attention or Apple's for that matter.

For example, according to recent published data, US graphic firm sites total approximately 62,000, with an estimated 219,000 professional "seats" in the market. That number of professionals seats is approximately one quarter of the total unit shipments Apple is shipping each calendar quarter. That should begin to put into perspective the size of a market that would attract Apple and software developers for that market. Also, it is generally regarded than if a software product ships 10,000 total units per year it is a "hit" product. Depending on the product this number can be half as much (5,000) and still be a "hit" product for the company that produced it. All of this means that because of the size of the graphics market a company's software product only needs to capture 5-10 percent of the market to be really successful. Those are really good odds and it is understandable while the graphics market is flooded with software products.

"At just under 100 firms, the list is puny compared to the actual estimates for Mac market share in the AEC space. For example, in the Boston and Cambridge area here in Massachusetts there are reportedly over 500 architectural firms, with over 160 of them being Macintosh-based practices. That number equates to approximately 32 percent of the market (in firms, not seats)."

The architecture and AEC professionals market cannot be estimated in the slightest from the Architects List, even in regards to a sense of Macintosh market share in the AEC space. For one thing, many Mac firms may simply not know of the Architosh site or its listing. Architects may also opt to not be listed for whatever set of reasons. At just under 100 firms, the list is puny compared to the actual estimates for Mac market share in the AEC space. For example, in the Boston and Cambridge area here in Massachusetts (the world's highest saturation of architects) there are reportedly over 500 architectural firms, with over 160 of them being Macintosh-based practices. That number equates to approximately 32 percent of the market (in firms, not seats).

The number of "seats" (separate CPU's) may actually exceed 32 percent, as many of the Boston area's biggest firms are Mac firms -- five of the largest have an estimate of over 300 Macintosh seats combined. What this tells us is that the Macintosh market share -- at least in the Boston area -- for AEC is far better than the over-all Macintosh market share, estimated to be at less than 10 percent worldwide. We hope that as time goes on more accurate information regarding the actual Mac-based market share in the AEC space can be reported here at Architosh and that this information can be disseminated to bring a greater awareness to both Apple and its developers. Certainly, being listed on the Architects List page helps us to better sense the real numbers for Mac firms.
