The Copenhagen firm BIM Equity is arranging an international conference about Open BIM in Denmark this coming November, called Nordic BIM Academy—Copenhagen 2016. The event takes place November 2nd – 4th, 2016.

More To Gain Under OpenBIM

Thomas Graabæk, Partner at BIM Equity told Architosh the goal of the conference “is to recognize the huge potential of ‘free’ collaboration between the AEC stakeholders, and to show there is more to gain from choosing different software titles that bring value for each company, project or assignment, than trying to do all-in-one software across the whole project.”

Under the OpenBIM mantra than the conference also aims to who the virtues of collaboration in BIM using the ‘reference method’, where you “can model what you want and how and what makes sense to you,” versus the ‘federated method’ where “you only model your part of the project and all the models must fit perfectly together as a puzzle in the federated model in the end.”

Nordic OpenBIM Event

buildingSMART, Nohr-CON and BIM Equity will host the 3-day conference which consists of a tightly packed schedule of lectures, workshops and activities including:

  • Welcome Reception
  • High level keynote presentations from leaders from the technology industry
  • Project specific case studies and OpenBIM in action
  • Excursions to building sites and office visits
  • ‘Build Copenhagen Live’ competition
  • Dinner and social networking

The conference takes place at the Marriott AC Hotel Bella Sky Copenhagen. On the first day (Wednesday) in the afternoon the attendees can participate in architecture field trips and then end with a welcome reception. ‘Build Live Copenhagen’ competition also launches that day by buildingSMART.

Architosh Commentary

This looks like a fabulous event in the making. The quality of the architectural projects that are either part of the site field trips or discussed in presentations are absolutely superb. And they range in size from the somewhat intimate Hoki Museum, in Japan, to the Ferenc Puskas Stadium in Budapest, Hungary, and everything in between.

The quality of the speakers is also excellent, from Patrick MacLeamy of HOK and buildingSMART to folks like Jakob Lange, partner at BIG, who heads BIG IDEAS, its technology-driven special projects division, among others. Thomas Graabæk noted that in the nordic countries OpenBIM workflows are very prevalent and in the past few years “IFC in on the lips of everyone.” This event will continue to advance BIM and OpenBIM workflows in both nordic countries and hopefully throughout Europe as participants bring back with them learned and acquired knowledge and skills to employee in future projects.
