AIA: Autodesk launches Dynamo and FormIt 360 Pro in Atlanta

At AIA Atlanta last week Autodesk announced the all new Autodesk Dynamo Studio, a stand-alone application, plus FormIt 360 Pro for early-stage conceptual modeling with built-in real-time collaboration, whole building energy analysis and solar analysis.

Back in Boston, today marks the beginning of a stream of show reports on all that we saw in Atlanta during the AIA National Convention and Exhibition. We will start with Autodesk because we will have something later in the week, following another meeting in Boston, to share as well.

Dual Launches

Autodesk announced two launches during its Autodesk Innovation Forum get-together on Thursday night: Dynamo Studio and FormIt 360 Pro.

Both product launches are very much focused on the front-end of the design process, particularly with the FormIt 360 product line. This award-winning product line brings the power of conceptual modeling to a mobile and cloud-based workflow that also incorporates the desktop. The new Autodesk FormIt 360 Pro offers both cloud-based collaboration among team members but powerful analysis brought up into the design process.

“Conceptual design has always been a necessary and important part of the architectural design process, but it has been disconnected from other parts of the workflow,” said Jim Lynch, Vice President, Building and Collaboration Product Line Group, Autodesk. At the Autodesk Innovation Forum the Autodesk team said that both product launches are focused on extending BIM earlier into the design workflow.

FormIt 360 Pro

The new Autodesk FormIt 360 Pro offers powerful analysis and cloud-based collaboration previously not available in the free version. As with the free version, FormIt 360 Pro is a web and mobile app (that’s two separate app experiences) for early stage BIM-connected conceptual design.

With FormIt 360 Pro designers and architects can understand energy and solar analysis from day one on their conceptual ideas. The tool provides shadow and sun-path studies, and, as been noted before on Architosh, you can import a map underlay of the physical site to your model in FormIt 360 Pro.

FormIt 360 Pro allows architects to work on models concurrently with other team members, whether on an iPad or Android tablet on the go, or on a web browser back in the office. Both the free and Pro version of FormIt 360 support native Autodesk Revit integration. The goal is to extend BIM deeper into the early stages of design, says the company.

SketchUp Importer for FormIt

Also in this release is a new feature called FormIt Converter, which allows users to import SketchUp and Revit data as editable geometry within FormIt 360 and FormIt 360 Pro.

Autodesk Dynamo Studio

Also released at AIA was the new Dynamo Studio that helps designers focus on visual scripted logic for exploring parametric conceptual design models. Dynamo was first created by Autodesk and then taken open source. Now the company has developed Dynamo Studio with some big changes, most importantly, the separation from other applications and thusly creating a stand-alone application.

Being untethered, Autodesk hopes Dynamo Studio will extend design into other interoperable workflows for documentation, fabrication, coordination, simulation and analysis to rapidly test and iterate designs to discover more options in less time.

New Connections

Autodesk Dynamo Studio, as a new free-standing solution, is interoperable and compatible with Bentley SAP, McNeel & Associates’ Rhinoceros (Rhino), Microsoft Excel and Tableau—in addition to Autodesk applications in Autodesk Revit, Autodesk Navisworks, and Autodesk Robot.

Autodesk Dynamo Studio comes via an Autodesk Subscription plan at $300.USD per year. You can learn more here.

Autodesk FormIt 360 Pro is available for Apple iOS and Google Android tablets from $25.USD per month. The free version is a quick download. FormIt 360 Pro features unique features in: Real-time collaboration, whole-building energy analysis, and solar analysis. Both programs also work in the web browser.
