3D printer manufacturing leader, 3D Systems (NYSE: DDD) this week announced the immediate availability of the Sense™ 3D scanner for Apple’s Mac computers and features an upgrade to the Sense software to version 1.1.

Gain some Sense

The Sense™ is the first 3D scanner designed for the consumer and optimized for 3D printing; it’s the only 3D scanner to deliver precise instant physical photography, so that everyone can capture his or her scannable moments. Yes, you heard that right. We don’t just live in an era of photographic moments–we now have scannable moments!

The Sense is priced at 399.USD and is available on 3D Systems’s consumer destination website Cubify.com, as well as select retailers around the world. Current Sense users can download software version 1.1 today on Cubify.com, which should unlock the Mac support many users have been waiting for.

Sense has flexible scan size and can capture everything from a picture-perfect cupcake to a full-body selfie, processing data in seconds for an instantly 3D printable file.  New features in the latest software extend beyond Mac support to include an improved scan tracking and stability, and upgraded auto-enhance that corrects brightness and color with just one click.

Sense comes with an intuitive user interface with easy and automated zoom, track, focus, crop and share tools. Sense output can be sent to Cube® and CubeX™ 3D printers, or directly uploaded to Cubify.com for cloud printing in a range of materials, including Ceramix, Aluminix, and Clear.

“The Sense was an instant hit, becoming one of our most popular consumer products overnight and the easiest way for mainstream users to experience the world of 3D,” said Rajeev Kulkarni, Vice President and General Manager, Consumer Products, 3DS. “The Sense’s intuitive nature, portability, range, unmatched quality and powerful user interface and user experience has spurred a new social movement around 3D sharable and printable physical photography.”

Sense is powered by 3D Systems’ proprietary Geomagic® software, making the Sense unmatched in quality, scan speed and easy editing capabilities for end user customers. Sense is the only consumer scanner in its class that delivers professional performance at an affordable consumer price.

Architosh Analysis

This looks like a fantastic product that Architosh is going to have to get on our review docket soon. The mobility, low cost, simplicity and ability to handle a flexible range of scanned objects is widely applicable to many end users. For this site’s audience, architects could use this product to scan objects on buildings, architectural physical models and equipment for new construction. Those in industry segments like medical architecture could scan medical equipment in situ in existing facilities, for example. For industrial and product designers this is also quite interesting. In the end it will be consumers and their endless creativity that will likely spike interest in this product.
